Devotional: Everything In It’s Right Place

“The opportunities we have to worship together as the church are fantastic times when we collectively get to remind ourselves of what is central and what is peripheral.”

[Scripture]

Ephesians 1:20-23 (MSG)

All this energy issues from Christ: God raised him from death and set him on a throne in deep heaven, in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from his rule. And not just for the time being, but forever. He is in charge of it all, has the final word on everything. At the center of all this, Christ rules the church. The church, you see, is not peripheral to the world; the world is peripheral to the church. The church is Christ’s body, in which he speaks and acts, by which he fills everything with his presence.

[Application]

This is just one of those seasons in life when we need to be reminded of what’s in the center.  For all the turmoil, for all the division, for all the uncertainty in the world right now we need to be reminded that nothing escapes the rule and the centrality of Christ.    He is aware of all that is going on in the world and he is aware of all that is going on in your life and not only is he aware of it, he is Lord of it.

Worshipping God resets our vision on what our vision should be set on.  So many other things in life will fight to be the center, but here is the reality… only Christ is the center, only Christ rules, only Christ is above all.  In this world the church is not peripheral to what’s going on in the world.  It is central.  Throughout the ages governments have risen and fallen, political parties have won and lost, financial markets have soared and crashed, but through it all Christ has remained Lord.

The opportunities we have to worship together as the church are fantastic times when we collectively get to remind ourselves of what is central and what is peripheral.

[Prayer]

Lord Jesus, I pray that as the church worships together that you are right-sized, that we are reminded that you are central, eternal, and that no name or power is exempt from your rule.  Refresh our minds and hearts of your Lordship over all as we worship.
